After a very hectic Spring Tradeshow Season, including our annual Awards & Charity Celebration, we have lots of news to report as well as new benefits for you – so, please sit down, relax and don’t give up if this turned out to be a bit longer than intended.

As reported in our Winter 2003/2004 newsletter, Hannelore’s invitation by the Chinese Government to present the state of the industry in the US to our peers in Shanghai, she learned quite a bit about the Chinese spa culture. Her power point presentation which was given at the Spa and Resort / Medical Spa Expo in New York City was well received.

Bologna, Italy was her next stop this April upon invitation from the organizers of Cosmoprof, the largest and oldest trade show of the beauty industry, celebrating it’s 35th anniversary this year. The talk centered around the development of the DAY SPA in the United States. As the day spa concept is being exported all over the world, they are looking to us for “how to do it”.

The DSA/IMSA annual Awards & Charity Event was a huge success! Congratulations to our Distinguished Day Spa Award 2004 recipient – GLEN IVY DAY SPA AT BREA, CA. Read all about it here. We like to once more thank all of our sponsors who contributed so much to the success and Monique Iacobacci for her tireless efforts to make this such a wonderful evening for everyone who attended. Here are some pictures for you to remember the evening, and for those who missed it … eat your heart out, and plan to be there next year!

Eric Light on CNN FINANCIAL NEWS on Wednesday 6/15 – hope you all tuned in!

Media contacts have been increasing over the past few weeks:
We have given interviews to the NYTimes, Newsweek, Chicago Tribune, CNBC, CNN, Journal News in White Plains, Self, Shape, NBC11 San Francisco, Spa 20/20, Spa Business, Discoverspas.com and assisted in creating a list of medical spas in Healing Lifestyle & Spas and the medical spa section on Spafinder.com. We went to Washington with the NCEA and Eric Light had the opportunity to strike up a conversation with the congressman from NJ about what he would do if there was a way to reduce health care costs. The conversation turned into a serious discussion about preventive care vs. acute care. “He liked the discussion well enough to introduce me to one of his colleagues and also two senior staff people. I've now been asked to draft an outline proposal for a bipartisan working group”, reports Eric Light, President of the International Medical Spa Association.

 TID BITS

Self-Coining:
Here’s something that needs a word: You get spam in your inbox, and the subject line is disguised to keep you from filtering it out. What would you call this? Spamouflage (camouflaging the spam) – “Google” it and you’ll get 106 listings – how many spa related? Let me know when you get the count!
Adapted from Paul McFedries in FAST COMPANY, February 2004

Seeking – Avoiding: Do you have a seeking mindset or an avoiding mindset? Do you seem to do things primarily in order to gain something or to avoid something? Psychologists estimate that seeking people comprise approximately 70% of the population and avoidance people make up about 30%. Of course everyone values both directions. The key lies in which one is predominant.
Adapted from Brent Finnamore in SPA MANAGEMENT, May 2004

Healthfully,

Hannelore R. Leavy
Executive Director
